Guiding your son as he grows up into a little man can take your breath away. The sheer amount of energy that is exerted just to keep pace with his natural curiosity could substitute for the high impact workouts most adults pay a fitness trainer to provide.
I photographed this adorable little guy at his home during a family portrait session in the Toronto area. After setting up a portable backdrop together with my main light modified through a big soft box, I stood ready with my camera for whatever would happen.
My 2 ½-year-old model arrived on time after a proper consultation with mom regarding wardrobe. He marched onto the assigned spot willing and ready to have his professional portrait taken looking good in his nifty outfit. But befitting most dashing dudes, he found he was none too impressed with the concept of standing still and holding a pose; not when there was plenty of action just begging to be had in other places. We had a 5-minute window of opportunity before his attention was completely gone. Fortunately, it turns out that was all that was needed to get this beautiful children’s portrait.
When we are lucky enough to see these tender moments – I do what all photographers do, I capture them with my breath held, knowing they are gone almost the second we recognize them. A portrait such as this will freeze the beauty and wonder of childhood as the years tumble by allowing us to relive these innocent days forever.
